An example of a quantum technology is a cold atom gravimeter which, compared to other methods, offers potentially more accurate measurements of gravity, as well as a reduced time to obtain these measurements. By placing a gravimeter in space, large areas can be surveyed much more easily than on the surface of the Earth. To carry out these experiments, a series of ultra-stable lasers are required to be pulsed accurately according to specific timing sequences. Currently there are two main factors preventing the deployment of cold atom gravimeters in space: the size and weight of a typical present-day set-up is not suitable for use on a satellite, and no space qualified system is available on the market (most laboratories are using commercial devices to control their experiments).

RAL Space is working within the frame of an Innovate UK/EPRSC project, in collaboration with M2 Lasers Ltd, Magnetic Shields Ltd and the University of St. Andrews to develop a Miniaturised Cold Atom GRavimEter for Space ApplicatioNs (MCLAREN). MCLAREN aims to demonstrate how a cold atom gravimeter can be made suitably small and light for use in space, as well as to develop a route for space qualification. RAL Space is responsible for the design of the laser control electronics, which will in turn control the experiments to obtain gravity measurements.

When complete, MCLAREN has the potential to accelerate the deployment of cold atom gravimeters in space. Potential applications include areas of terrestrial use, for example underground surveys and locating oil and mineral deposits, to exploring other celestial bodies and fundamental physics.
